Selling Goods Like Scented Candles Using Social Web Sites
Social media is a dynamic tool for the marketing specialist of products in this modern age of information and interconnectivity. Many now live their lives and stay in contact with mates on the Internet. Social meetings, competitions and product details are easily available to digest by the most elementary of devices and novice users but how does the product manufacturer, retailer or marketing pro get their voice heard over that of the gang?
This piece gives a few pointers that may steer you in the right path. You can market anything using this new media including a candle shop, brand or anything else you can think of.
Firstly , what is social media? Web sites such as Facebook, Twitter and others are the backbone of this new media. They require that folks enroll in an account using an e-mail address, designate a screen name and probably an image. Many ask for basic details of the user to build up their demographic advertising databases (they do after all make money from their users in one sort or another). Once registered, you commence by connecting with pals.
This permits folks to friend folks on the Facebook network by sending them friend requests. After you’ve added several chums you begin to see their posts on your own news feeds and they see yours. This is a good way to see what your friends are doing. More importantly for business, you also see which products your pals like, their music preferences, things they loathe etc. It’s like a huge database of detail that the business marketeer just needs to decode. The attraction for the business owner is you can post on a company page, lure Facebook users to like you and then your messages are seen by them. Perfect selling, they like you already!
Twitter is similar to Facebook but you don’t ask authorization to connect folks or company accounts, you simply do it. Whether they follow you back is up to them, some do, some do not. This is my preferred platform for product promotion. It is fast paced, fully interactive and addictive. Many tweeters spend several hours every day tweeting (the name given to sending a message of at most 140 characters on the network). The challenge for a company is to build a large following, engage with them and build a buzz around your product.
My Tips For Twitter Promotion
- Use a cool image as your avatar - your picture that’s attached to each tweet
- Use an image that represents your company
- Keep it personal - Your tweets should be wide-ranging. Some promoting products, others talking about the weather, what you are doing, your dog, kitty or budgie. No one wants to tweet to the bore in the room with only 1 topic of conversation
- Begin to know your supporters - what do they like? Competitions, talking about their sickness you name it “just get to know it.
- Run a contest - This is enormously popular on twitter and most competitions receive hundreds or possibly thousands of entries. Request a follow & a retweet and put up a prize inside your budget. I recommend your products but many corporations now offer extravagant prizes such as i-pads and cell telephones even though these have zip to do with their business. It is actually about raising follower numbers and when you do tweet a promotional message, its potential reach!
- Use a hash tag - # is a twitter device for tracking a particular topic. Utilize a unique # such as BusinessABXComp to follow your competition entries. Much easier than trawling thru hundreds of tweets to find competition entries.
- Keep it light hearted “Uninteresting tweeters infrequently keep supporters for long.
- It needs time so keep at it.
